Our own banner!

Our new banner
Look what we picked up from Staples today. Thanks go to General Manager Doug Mead and Operations Manager Ryan Gelsch for donating this high-quality, outdoor vinyl banner to JCSHG. Also, thanks to Matthew McMichael for digitizing our logo and to Heather Thomas for designing it. Come see the banner yourself on Saturday at Kidsfest in downtown Jefferson City from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We will have sidewalk chalk available for the kids to decorate the street and tattoos for decorating themselves.

First Aid Badge

"Help! There's been an accident!"
We held our third monthly Quest Club meeting on Tuesday with 21 kids from 11 families participating. We welcomed one new family this month.

After roll call and introducing themselves and telling about any badges they had completed or were working on, students began discussing "What is First Aid?" They divided themselves into groups of three to five and then discussed these questions:
  • Why is first aid important?
  • Why should you think of your own safety before rushing in to help an injured or sick person?
  • How do you think someone might feel if they have had an accident?
  • How could you help keep them calm?

After the small-group discussions, members shared their answers with the entire club.

Next, members role played calling 911. They learned that sometimes you get a recording when you call 911, sometimes you get a busy signal, and sometimes you immediately get a 911 dispatcher. They also learned what to do if you accidentally dial 911 when there is not an emergency

To wrap up the meeting, the students all came together to share some of the things they learned at club that day and to repeat the club's motto: "Ask anything, explore everything!"
We are looking forward to our first Badge Pinning Ceremony at next month's meeting on June 19. We will be meeting at a local park and working on the Tie Dye Badge. Come join us!

Radio Voices

Our field trip attendees and their hosts.
On Wednesday, May 9, at 11 a.m., several of our families participated in our second field trip; this one was to KAT Country radio station. Our guide, Steve Morse, showed us all around the station. We saw the news room, a broadcasting room where the children were shown what every button does and how they use their automated systems, and we were able to watch a DJ speak on live radio. The children also went to the production room and were allowed to record their voices and then hear them played back. The kids enjoyed this tour and some are looking forward to broadcasting when they get older. Thank you so much KAT Country and Steve for making this field trip a success.

First Annual Bake Sale

Would you like to buy some cookies for $1?
Friday we held our first group fundraiser--a bake sale. And it went swimmingly! We sold cookies (regular-size and monster-size), brownies, and pies at our local Walmart. For the lunch shift we sold baked goods from 11 a.m. till 1 p.m. and then we started selling again at 4 p.m. We had planned to sell till 7 p.m. but ran out of baked goods about 5:30 p.m. We were overwhelmed at this bake sales' success. Our goal was to raise $200. Donations put us well above that at $273.53! Thanks to all our members who helped out and all the community members who supported us. We hope you enjoyed your goodies!
