First community service project!

Some of the younger volunteers taking a break.
Last week our group help set up The Giving Tree at its new location here in Jefferson City.

Six of our families--six adults, 12 children--sorted clothes, hung them, and organized them on shelves. When it was time to hang the sorted clothes, several of the children pretended they were train engines running from where the clothes were being put on hangers to where they were being hung up. Everyone seemed to enjoy the project and The Giving Tree was most appreciative.

The Giving Tree takes unwanted, donated clothing and household items and passes them on to people who need them. It operates like Goodwill or Salvation Army, but all items are free. It was created because its founders understand that when someone is on a tight budget, having to buy basic items such as shoes and clothes is a burden and can add up fast, even when buying from Goodwill or Salvation Army for $4 to $5 an item. It is their hope that together we can relieve some of the financial burdens people are facing by providing some basic needed items for free.

We plan to do a community service project every quarter. If you have an idea for a project, please comment here. Thanks!

Playing in the leaves

It was a beautiful fall afternoon for last week's playdate at a local park. There was much fun to be had climbing, running, playing hide and seek, and playing in the leaves--as evidenced by the leaves in this little one's hair.

Please come join us for a playdate. Visit our Yahoo! group to find out more. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JCSecularHomeschooling/

First field trip!

Just two months after our inception as JCSHG, we celebrated with our first field trip. Three of our group's families met up at Fischer Farms yesterday for a hayride, a visit to their pumpkin patch, and to get lost in the corn mazes. There was also a great big box of corn that the younger kids loved playing in, a straw bale maze, a pile of big straw bales to climb, a teepee made of corn stocks, and a barn to visit with horses, chickens and chicks, and pigs.
It was a gorgeous, though windy, day for it and the kids exhausted themselves running around and playing. It was a great day to spend time with friends and enjoy the fall weather.
JCSHG has weekly playdate or field trips. If you would like to join us for a playdate or field trip, please visit our Yahoo! group--Jefferson City Secular Homeschooling.

Welcome all! We are so excited about our new group in Jefferson City, Missouri! We wanted to form a group based on the belief that all families who homeschool in the area would be welcome regardless of religion, sexual orientation, race, disability, or style of homeschooling.
We strongly believe in the opportunity to homeschool our children in a loving, supportive environment- in and out of the home! Our group was formed to give families in the Jefferson City area a resource for free activities to aid in educating their children and also a support system and social group for all members. We are located on yahoo groups (JC Secular Homeschooling) and hope that if you live in the area and are homeschooling or interested in it, to check us out!
